Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a term used to describe problems that can result from prolonged computer use.  As many as 75% of computer users suffer from computer vision syndrome at some point.  Most people will experience eye fatigue and discomfort when using a computer for extended periods of time, and it usually gets worse the more time you spend viewing the computer screen.  Many people find themselves spending many hours out of the day starring at computer screens for both work-related and recreational activities.

Viewing a computer screen is much different than viewing a book or newspaper.  Glare, reflections and letters that are not as defined make computer demands different than normal reading demands.  Even people with glasses, who have no complaints when reading a book, may find themselves having difficulty working for long periods on computers.  This commonly leads to the poor posture that many people undertake when working on computers.  There is no magic number for how much time must be spent on the computer before symptoms begin to occur, but usually people begin to experience discomfort after about 2 hours.
